Roger Federer - the best ever? |
Lead | |
|
One more major tournament win and he'll break Pete Sampras record for wins of the majors. I've seen some of the greats, who were more exciting to
watch than Federer - Borg, Laver, Sampras, Ashe etc. A case could be made for any of them as the greatest, but in the end, Federer really has a consistency
over the years that nobody else managed, from the time he was 19 until now and he doesn't look anywhere close to finished. So, the title may not quite
belong to him yet, but he's very close and barring injury, I think it's clear that consistency over a long period will make him the greatest ever.

Not too much into tennis these days. There are no more exciting or very entertaining players anymore as can be said about golf as well.

Golf? | ||

I've never been that much into watching for long periods, since it's slow action, but I do somewhat disagree with you. With Tiger Woods, Phil
Mickelson, etc, it's a pretty exciting time for players.

Tiger and Phil | ||

They haven't been doing well lately making golf like the recent US open very unwatchable. Not sure if Tiger will get back on track. |

Never thought I'd see a golfer better than Jack Nicholas, but Tiger is clearly the best ever and if he does get back on track, we'll be even better.
Some sports clearly do have an all time best. Tiger is one. Federer close to being another:
Baseball - Babe Ruth (still unbelievable stats and consistency) there have been many great players, but nobody ever accomplished or will accomplish all he did Basketball - Michael Jordan - there were many players I loved such as Bill Russell and Walt Frazier, but I don't think this is debatable. MJ is clearly the greatest of all time. Hockey - Close to a tie between Bobby Orr and Wayne Gretzky. You can make a good case either way. |

Sports Impact Titans | ||
|
There are those in sports that have had a very major impact on that sport. The greatest and major impact are not always the same. In terms of impact here is my
list.
Baseball-Ruth no question had the greatest impact and is the greatest player especially with most recent records being aided with drugs. Golf-Arnold Palmer had the greatest impact to the sport. Without Arnold others following may not have had the impact they have or left. Hockey-Gretsky is has been titled "The great one" so aptly so. He elevated the sport more than any one else. NASCAR-Richard Petty aka "The King" made the sport into what it is today. Basketball: Jordan had the biggest impact no question here. Bowling: Dick Webber. A class individual that elevated the sport like no one else becoming the sports #1 amabassador after retirement. I do consider Webber the greatest as well. NFL: Extremely tough one here. Too many players and non-players have impacted the sport. This would be a list vs. one individual. |

I didn't pick a football player as the best ever either, because football is such a team sport. I'd have to pick position by position rather than one
player. You can't really compare a running back to a defensive lineman or a quarterback to a safety. You can't even really compare a quarterback to a
receiver.
I point out that the 70s Steelers, which (sorry Patriot fans) is the greatest team of all time had an impact player at almost every position. |

NFL | ||
|
Finding an individual having the greatest impact is very hard in the NFL as previously said. If pressed hard for a short list I would say the original owners
of the Dallas Cowboys and Kansas City Chiefs who were the chief architechs of the current NFL that was formed by the merger of the old NFL and AFL leagues.
Also I would add Roone Arlidge for starting MNF that become TV legend.

Federer broke Sampras record. He really is amazingly consistent. It was a very good tight final.
