The first thing that will come to mind is that 2008 was a landmark year for very many severe horrible things that occured.

The election and campaign.
Hope, deceiving as it is, serves at least to
lead us to the end of our lives by an agreeable route. ~François de la Rochefoucauld

The election was the final straw topping off a horrible year.

Horrible? To the contrary, I found it to be a good year overall, personally, although I see how I could be in the minority.
I've watched my children grow a year older. (Any year I get to do this is a good year.) I've watched my wife's career flourish. I had many a great Bike Ride. The Steelers look like they could do something because of dumb luck. Isiah Thomas no longer runs the Knicks. And, the election: I no longer feel there is a clueless baboon at the helm of the country. (Well, OK, he's still there. But, he's been inert for a while, so...) (I could go on. And, no, it wasn't all good.) |

It was a very mixed year. In our family we celebrated two big birthdays - mine and my sons. Mine was celebrated in New York. the actual day was clelerated
at a brunch with some of my very favorite family members. We stayed a few days, hit all different kinds of restaurants and got to go to the theater. My kind
of celebration. For my son there was a party and I got to meet some very special people.
On the downside there was loss, some sicknesses and a few things a little hard to define. For the world there was still much too much poverty and far too many wars. I still count myself as very fortunat. |

Both good and bad things happened this year, but I would definitely say that. what comes first to my mind are two expressions:

Kind of split into two for me. Before I turned 50 in September, it had been a pretty good year. A lot has gone wrong since then. I know it's just a
coincidence, but this year at age 49 was much better than at age 50.

I guess the early part of the year was okay. Had a nice vacation. Got a promotion. Was able to make some needed home improvements. But the entire year has been
clouded by the 2nd half. My mother in the ER for possible heart attack (turned out to be gallstones). My husband became unemployed. My tiny savings account is
nearly dry and if he doesn't find a job early in the new year we are going to be in a horrible place. My IRA account lost 40% and hasn't even begun to
rebound yet.
I wasn't thrilled about the election results but I'm still somewhat optimistic. We needed CHANGE and well this will be change for sure. |

It was a very good year. Having 'discovered' Toastmasters at the end of last year, I made a lot of progress through the material, finding a
self-confidence in the process that has leaked through to other aspects of my life. I won second place in a national-level speech contest. I founded a new TM
club composed (almost) entirely of teachers which has been extremely rewarding. I finished my Ph.D thesis about four hours ago and I'm moving to a new,
higher paying job when the new school year begins in March (on break until then). And maybe best of all: nothing significant happened that would qualify as
'bad.'

This year was very mixed.
On the good side, Spending time with family and freinds when we could. Celebrating Birthdays (Especially Jeff's!) :-) On the down side, I lost 4 very special people from my life the last one was on Dec. 30th and the next day I had to have my gallbladder out. That is how I ended my Year 2008. On the plus side for this year I am actually feeling very good on Day 4 after the surgery. So I am really praying that this year is much better.

So sorry, Patty, I did not know you had that many losses this year, especially this last one.
Really good to see you feeling so much better since your surgery! |
